it was supposed to be an Audi from the beginning. However, once the project was completed, Audi for whatever reason rejected it so Porsche decided to put their own badge on it and sell it as an entry-level model that people would buy and then graduate up to the 911 from. It's powered by what is essentially half a 928 V8 single-cam motor, very sluggish powertrain that doesn't rev too well. They can be picked up these days for extremely cheap, mainly because the maintenance costs just are not worth it.
